Fully Present

“Fully Present”

Luke 10:38-39 NIV-  As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

In the past year or two, I have come to learn more of how vital it is to be fully present for moments that are so important.  When I am home with my family, I need to be fully present.  Phone down or put away as much as possible.

When I am at work, I need to be fully present and focus on the work I have to do.  My employer expects me to put my full attention into the work I am doing.  I take breaks, of course, but for the most part I am expected to put in a full 8 hour day of honest work to get the job done.

When I am at church, I need to be fully present so that I can connect with God through worship and fellowship with others.  If I am worried about too much and feeling anxious about life, I can get very distracted and that leaves me just singing the words of the songs with no feeling inside myself and I’m not engaged with the sermon where God’s Word should be penetrating my heart.

When I am on my runs, I need to be fully present so that I can focus on my pace, breathing and endurance.  A couple of weeks ago, I was able to complete my second half marathon.  It was a wonderful accomplishment!  I give God all the glory because He gave me the ability to do so.  I was able to be fully present that morning and could totally focus on being on the run and finishing well.

If we want to be fully present, like Mary, with those we love the most and when we are committed to doing a job at our workplace, then we need to be intentional.  Mary was very intentional about being fully present.  And, oh man, did it ever tick her sister off!  Martha was fuming and told Jesus, “Tell her to come help me!”  Whoah, Martha, ease up there!  You just yelled at Jesus.  Martha wasn’t a bad person at all trying to get preparations made for the dinner, but she was not fully present at all for what was most important.

Take sunrises and sunsets for example.  I absolutely love looking at both!  I know that if I am not fully present to take in these moments, they are gone before I know it.  I have to be fully present to take these sights in and then they’re gone.

There are moments God gives us and we need to be intentional about being fully present or we completely miss them.  Or, we have expected times when people want us to be fully present or we get into trouble.  If our boss catches us goofing off and watching videos when we are supposed to be working, we will probably get talked to.  If it happens enough, probably fired!

We need to be more intentional, as Mary was, and strive to be fully present.  Home, work, church and other places, putting down our phones and focusing on what’s really important.
