"Be Careful Little Eyes What You See"
By Zach Wood
Psalm 101:3-4
I will set before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of
faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me.
Men of perverse heart shall be far from me; I will have
nothing to do with evil.
Strong words from King David. As I read these verses recently, the words
just echoed in my mind. We live in a world that is trashed with filth from
the enemy. We live with these things around us each and every day. No
matter where we are, we are bombarded, in some way, with the temptations
which try hard to take us off-course from where God intends us to go. The
decisions can become extremely hard because our human nature and human flesh
react in a way that puts desire in us to go down the wrong road. We have
all been there. We have regretted decisions and cannot go back and change
them.
I am sure we all know the song that goes "Be careful little eyes what you
see, oh be careful little eyes what you see, for the Father up above is
looking down in love, so be careful little eyes what you see". This is
usually introduced to children in kids church. I have sung this song many
times, but the meaning never really grabbed hold of me until Casting Crowns
came out with their song "Slow Fade". Then, it really made sense. As King
David says, do not set any vile thing before you. We make choices every
single day in our walk with Christ. We choose where to go, who to be with
and what we look at. It is so easy to surround ourselves with people who
will do nothing but drag us away and entice us with vile things. Oh sure,
it can look harmless at first, but then we get into the slow fade. We must
be extra careful these days to surround ourselves with people who will
encourage us and help us in our walk with Christ. However, Christ calls us
to be witnesses to those around us who are being vile and doing things of
that nature.
We are called to be in the world, but not of it. Christ wants us to have
an impact on those around us, but not be impacted by them in a way that
entices us to be swayed to the things they practice. That is extremely
important for us to understand. We need to be strong to not let faithless
men cling to us. We can be around them and be a witness, but we must
remember to be very careful that they do not persuade us down their road of
a vile lifestyle. As this Scripture says, we must make sure the people who
have perverse hearts be far from us. We need not choose to hang out with
them and be part of their crowd to have a good time. If we are around them,
we should be witnesses. It is very vital we remember to be witnesses in
every way we can in any situation. We must each use our common sense and
check our heart condition when we are around them to make sure we are the
ones trying to persuade and witness, not the other way around. I want to
make this clear. We are called upon by God to be a witness, but not be
dragged down by the things of a vile lifestyle.
Through this devotional, I pray that each of us can come to a better
remembrance of what it means to keep vile things from our sight and our walk
with Christ. We are all human and make mistakes. We can either choose to
turn away from these things and be a witness in whatever way possible, or we
can choose to follow the vile things and jump deeper into the pit that takes
us further from God.
Be careful little eyes what you see.
