"I Should Be Fired"
By: Zach Wood
Matthew 28:19
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
One night a few weeks ago, my wife and I were talking about how we felt
we weren't "getting out" enough to talk with others who don't know Christ.
We talked about how we get so busy and consumed with our own lives that we
neglect to stop and think about how we need to minister to unbelievers.
They are all around us and yet, we fail to realize that Christ commands this
of us each and everyday. I remember telling my wife, with sorrow and tears
in my eyes, "Honey, we aren't doing our jobs". We both agreed and it really
brought hurt to us. We have a job description that we are not fulfilling.
I told her that if I was God, I would have fired "me" a long time ago.
You may be saying, "Zach, that's a bit harsh sounding in the title".
Maybe it's a bit blunt, but it's exactly how I feel when I look back and see
how much I've failed at being a true servant for Christ. This past
Saturday, our small group Bible Study went to a Casting Crowns concert.
Their first popular song, "If We Are The Body" was sung that night. As I
sang the words, I had tears in my eyes knowing that I'm not reaching out
like Jesus wants me to do. If we are the body, then why aren't His arms
reaching, His words teaching, and why is His love not showing them there is
a way? There's a problem if these questions are not being answered with our
lifestyle. This is why I feel that I should be fired. However, God does
not want to fire me, but to encourage me to do a better job.
If we can get our minds off of ourselves and onto the great mission that
we've ever been called to, then lives will start changing one by one. We
need to get out there and starting making disciples of people. It happens
in the tiniest ways sometimes. Times when we are not aware we have a chance
to minister to another person or group of people. This passage is part of
the Great Commission, not the "great suggestion". God does NOT suggest, He
commands!
Are you and I living up to the Great Commission? If we are both honest,
we would have to say no. We all have a long way to go in being better
ambassadors for Christ. As I said before, I have been failing my job
description as a Christian servant. Christ calls me to a job and I'm not
doing the job as I need to. I'm just glad he doesn't say that I'm fired.
He just gives me reminders that I need to get with the program and start
making some progress for Him. He reminds me that He loves me and will be
with me through all that life brings my way.
We have a job description. Let's really live it!
