"A Message To Us Worry-Warts"
By: Zach Wood
Luke 12:22-23
"Then Jesus said to his disciples,
'Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or
about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body
more than clothes.'"
Do we have any worry warts out there? Come
one....I want to see those hands! Don't be afraid to admit it. I tend to
be a worry-wart. I'm not as bad as I used to be, but I still have room for
improvement. In the passage here in Luke, Jesus explains to his disciples
that there is no need to worry about life. He adds in verse 25, "Who of you
by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" Jesus clearly does not want
us to worry about anything. Yeah, that's easier said than done, right?
Well, if Jesus commands it, we need to pay attention and focus on Him
instead of things we are worried about. It's clear that we cannot change
what's in the future or what might happen. Only God knows the future and
what will occur.
When we worry, we are just adding stress to
our lives, as I'm sure Jesus saw in the disciples He was teaching for 3
years. Don't you think they did a bit of worrying themselves? I think so!
However, He knew that it wasn't easy for them not to worry. But that was no
excuse for them to worry and neither is it for us.
I had a friend in college who was from
Australia. I enjoyed hearing him talk because I like hearing the "Aussie"
accent. I can remember him many times, when we were in a conversation about
a situation, saying, "No worries". And....he really meant it! He seemed to
have a peace about life. I think we can all learn something here from my
friend and from the passage on worrying that Jesus shares with His
disciples.
I love what Jesus says in verse 31, "But seek
his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well." If we want to
get away from the worry-wart syndrome, we've got to put our focus completely
on Him! Take our eyes off the circumstances around us, which we cannot
control most of the time, and learn to lean on Him and trust in His
guidance. God created life and He will supply all of our needs. We don't
need to worry because He is in charge and in control. When we try to take
control and worry about what's going on around us, then we take our eyes off
Jesus, and we fall from our spiritual health as well as our mental and
physical health. It's not worth the struggle.
Let Jesus take away your worry-wart syndrome
and give you peace of heart and mind.
