"Our Misunderstanding Of Holy"
By: Zach Wood
1 Peter 1:15-16
Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

I remember several times throughout my life when people would explain something to me and then watch me go off on my merry little way with a false reality of what they just said to me. I assumed I knew the vitality of the word(s) emphasized. Later on, however, I would come to realize that I completely missed the true meaning of what was said to me. Why? Maybe I only heard what I wanted to hear. Or possibly I only picked up on a few certain words and left some crucial words unexplained from my own stupidity of not asking for clarification. There were time I selectively listened and understood only what I wanted to hear. How can you possibly learn and perform anything in life when you don't know the full instructions or suggestions being given?

I read a devotional the other day which talked about the word "Holy". The more I thought about the word, I considered how often it is used to describe the Almighty God we serve each day. Holy is a serious word describing the fullness and perfection of our Father. We tend to think we know what Holy really is, but in reality, we are so far off from the real picture. What is the real picture then? The picture is God's Word and Jesus Christ Himself. I honestly can't think of anything more than simply following what God commands us to follow so that we remain pure in Him. No, I don't have any drawn-out, long explanations to share with you. I don't think I really need to. I believe that you and I both can come to an admittance of being ignorant of what Holy really entails and the value of what it really is.

God commands us to be Holy in all we do. We say we want to please Him, however, we don't seem to always put that belief into our daily routine. We might claim to be living Holy, but are we comparing ourselves to God's Word or the way the world lives? Yeah, we might live better than most of what society follows, but how are we in the light of God's "Holy"? I'll be the first to admit that I'm way off. Are you?
